How do I become a pilot? F.A.Q

Inspired by this article, today we’re going to answer a series of frequently asked questions from anyone who has ever considered working as an airline pilot.

We hope it will be useful to our readers.

  • What qualifications do you need to work as a pilot?

To work as a pilot, you must be 18 years or older (you can begin pilot training at 17), pass the initial Class 1 medical test at any aeronautical medicine center (these tests cost approximately 500 euros), and, most importantly, obtain an Airline Pilot License (ATPL) from an authorized pilot school (ATO). Once you obtain this, you can apply for airline pilot selection tests.

  • How much money do pilots earn?

It depends, of course, on the airline, the position, and the pilot’s experience. But to give you an idea, a newly hired pilot can earn €30,000 a year at Ryanair, €40,000 at Iberia, or €50,000 at EasyJet. However, you have to take into account not only the base salary but also the additional benefits (type rating, job advancement, long-haul, instructor, pension plan contributions, retention bonus, etc.).

  • How much does it cost to train as a pilot?

The cost of an airline pilot course can range from €80,000 to €100,000 in Spain.

  • How long does it take to train as a pilot?

Between 18 and 24 months. Typically, this is two academic years, but the exact length depends on the student’s academic performance.

  • Is it easy to find a job?

It all depends on the current situation in the aviation industry. It’s difficult in the midst of crises disrupting air transport, as happened after 9/11 or during the Covid pandemic. However, today, the world is experiencing an acute pilot shortage, with airlines hiring new pilots at an unprecedented rate.

  • What is the normal career progression in the life of a pilot?

Typically, a pilot will begin their career as a copilot (F/O). The biggest salary increase occurs when they become a captain. To do so, they must accumulate a minimum of 1,500 flight hours and pass the tests to obtain the full ATPL certification. However, the exact number of flight hours required to become a captain is usually higher and varies depending on the captain requirements of the company they work for. The next positions to fill are type rating instructor and, finally, type rating examiner, that is, the person in charge of examining and selecting other pilots to obtain their type rating for a specific aircraft model.

  • Is the pilot license a university degree?

The ATPL flight license is equivalent to a university degree, but only after accumulating 1,500 flight hours as a pilot in command, i.e., after approximately two years of work experience.

  • Can I be a pilot if I wear glasses?

Yes, you can be a pilot if you wear glasses. The fact that you need perfect vision to be a pilot is a somewhat outdated myth that dates back to when the pilot profession was linked to the Air Force. Before undergoing eye surgery, it’s best to take the initial Class 1 medical test to clear up any doubts about whether you can fly with your current glasses.
